Lightly Spalted Beech Bowl (Live edge)

This lightly spalted live edge bowl is a very aesthetic form.  Chalice-like in some regards it really is an eye catching piece.  Standing 4" (10cm) high and 5 and a half inches wide (14cm) it will adorn a window sill or dresser top with striking poise.
 
Spalting is a natural process, whereby competing fungi create a stunning alteration of colours and introduce the characteristic black lines.  While it can be re-created artificially it is notoriously difficult to predict and so spalted wood is prized by woodworkers alike.
